Diving Highlights Maldives    

The Maldives consists of 1,196 coral islands grouped in a double chain of 27 atolls.

 

Raa Atoll

 

This atoll has exceptionally good dive sites with a high concentration of marine species and soft coral gardens.

 

Raa Atoll consists of more than 90 isles of which 16 are inhabited. There is a good range of channels and thilas.

 

North Ari Atoll

 

The northern end of Ari Atoll has been blessed with many dives sites with a myriad of reef fish in varying sizes and brilliant coral formations.

 

Veligandu Kandu is a shallow channel with a depth of around 10 meters. The reef slopes at 25m and in the middle of the channel there is a large coral garden. Manta Rays are often seen swimming accross the channel. Maaya Thila is an excellent spot for catching site of grey reef sharks, white tips, batfish, zebra morays, stonefish, turtles and frog fish.

 

Fushi Faru is where whale sharks can often be found as well as white tip sharks and a plethora of reef life.

 

Faafu Atoll

 

The reefs in Faafu Atoll are newly opened for diving and a great number of exciting unspoiled dive sites await you. There is a large diverse amount of marine life and stunning coral locations.

 

The atoll has about 23 islands only 5 of which are inhabited. Seaplane is the best way to get there unless of course you are visiting on a liveaboard.

 

Seenu Atoll

 

This is the southmost atoll of the country and is the second largest city after Male. Seenu has amazing turquoise lagoons, superb coral reefs, profuse marine life and palm fringed sun kissed beaches.

 

Kuda Kandu Corner, Kuda Hohola and Umarus Plave are some of the more exotic dive sites. Demon Point is an excellent drift dive with good sightings of Manta Rays. Drift dives at Makunda and Muduka are good for sightings of Napolean Wrasse, white tip and grey tip reef sharks.

 

For those that enjoy wreck diving there is also British Royalty that sank in 1944. At 140 meters long sge rests on the seabed at 34 m and varied colorful marine life now call the ship home. Gulda Lamago with caves and overhangs is home to green turtles, eagle rays, sharks and manta rays.

 

Meemu Atoll

 

With 33 islands only 9 of which are inhabited this atoll is newly opened for tourism ensuring printine dive sites. The channels are covered with coral formations and are home to a diverse number of marine species.

 

There are also two wrecks, the Ravestein and the Ranvila both or which lie at recreational diving depths and are home to an abundance of marine life.

 

Dhaalu Atoll

 

Dhaalu Atoll is known for offering exciting dive spots and also for the large numbers of turtles that you will find in almost any area of the atoll.

 

There are also two wrecks of historical interest, the Liffey d\sunk in 1879 and the Utheemna which sunk in 1960. There are also a few sites that are excellent for macro photography due to lack of currents and also sites that regularly offer up napolean wrasse, turtles, manta rays, grey reef sharks and tuna.
